How to Play

1

Choose Your Setup

Select one of 7 fire truck photographs from the thumbnail bar. Then pick your grid size — 3×3 (8 tiles), 4×4 (15 tiles), or 5×5 (24 tiles). Finally, choose Easy mode (numbered tiles) or Expert mode (no numbers — image only). Changing any setting shuffles a new puzzle.

2

Slide the Tiles

The image is divided into a grid with one empty space. Click or tap any tile adjacent to the empty space to slide it. Your goal is to arrange all tiles in the correct order (left to right, top to bottom) to reconstruct the complete fire truck image. In Easy mode, tile numbers help guide you.

3

Track Your Progress

The stats bar shows your current status (“Out of Service” while solving, “Back in Service!” when complete), a running timer, and your total move count. Challenge yourself to solve the puzzle in fewer moves and less time.

4

Use Peek for Help

Stuck? Press and hold the “Peek” button to see the complete original image. Release the button to return to the puzzle. Use this sparingly — it's more satisfying to solve the puzzle from memory!

5

Complete the Puzzle

When all tiles are in the correct position, the puzzle border glows green, the status changes to “Back in Service!”, and the timer stops. The missing tile fills in to reveal the complete image. Hit “Shuffle” to play again or select a new image for a fresh challenge.

Tips & Strategies

Start With the Top Row

Focus on getting the top row correct first. Once it's locked in, work down row by row. This is especially important on 4×4 and 5×5 grids where the number of tiles makes random moves costly.

Work Corners First

Within each row, place corner tiles before middle tiles. Corner tiles have fewer possible positions, so getting them right early narrows down the remaining possibilities significantly.

Minimize Your Moves

Plan 2-3 moves ahead before clicking. A well-solved 3×3 takes 20-40 moves, a 4×4 around 50-80, and a 5×5 can take 100+. Try mastering 3×3 in Expert mode before moving up to larger grids.

Use Peek Sparingly

The “Peek” button shows the solution, but relying on it too much slows your progress. In Expert mode without numbers, Peek becomes more tempting — resist! Building your visual memory is half the challenge.

About the Fire Trucks

Each puzzle image features a different type of fire apparatus used by fire departments across the United States. Learn about the equipment that keeps communities safe while you play.

Ladder 41

Ladder 41

A modern aerial ladder truck stationed outside a classic brick firehouse. Ladder trucks carry ground ladders, an aerial ladder, and specialized rescue equipment for multi-story operations.

Classic Engine

Classic Engine

A traditional fire engine parked in front of a suburban station with the bay doors open and the American flag displayed. Engine companies are the backbone of firefighting, carrying water, hoses, and pumps.

Station Pride

Station Pride

A ladder truck parked on a freshly washed apron outside a fire station, with tall palm trees and blue sky in the background. Keeping apparatus clean and ready is a daily tradition in every firehouse — a reflection of the crew's pride and professionalism.

Gear Ready

A detailed view of an engine's open equipment compartments, revealing neatly organized SCBA bottles, axes, Halligan bars, hose packs, and medical bags. Every tool has a designated spot so firefighters can locate it in seconds during an emergency.

Pierce Power

Winter Watch

Winter Watch

A fire engine stands ready outside a brick firehouse during a heavy snowstorm, with a holiday wreath on the door and warm light glowing from inside the bay. Winter operations bring unique challenges — icy roads, frozen hydrants, and extreme cold exposure for crews.

Airport ARFF

Airport ARFF

Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles are purpose-built for aircraft emergencies. They carry thousands of gallons of water and foam, with roof-mounted turrets capable of penetrating aircraft fuselages.

Educational Value for Firefighters

Sliding puzzles develop spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and sequential problem-solving skills — all critical abilities for firefighters navigating complex emergency scenes. Research shows that regularly engaging in spatial reasoning puzzles improves working memory and mental rotation abilities.

The fire truck images in this puzzle showcase different types of apparatus that firefighters operate daily, from traditional engine companies to specialized airport rescue vehicles. Familiarizing yourself with these vehicles and their capabilities is part of every firefighter's training.
